Karen Shelton, PhD. is a Clinical Psychologist with over fifteen years of clinical and forensic experience. Dr. Shelton offers a variety of evaluation and consultation services to courts, attorneys, children, adolescents, and adults. She is licensed to practice in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Nevada.

Dr. Shelton received her Ph.D. in Child Clinical Psychology from the University of Alabama in 1996. She completed a child clinical predoctoral internship at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences/Arkansas Children’s Hospital and received postdoctoral training in child and adolescent evaluation and treatment in Virginia. Prior to entering private practice, Dr. Shelton managed an Evaluation Services program at a community mental health center, providing psychological and substance abuse evaluations for children, adolescents and adults referred by court, social services, and clinicians. Dr. Shelton has taught undergraduate and graduate level courses in psychology and has provided supervision to psychologists, doctoral level trainees, master's level therapists, and substance abuse counselors.

Dr. Shelton has conducted court-ordered evaluations in the following areas: child custody, termination of parental rights, suspected child abuse, foster care/ adoption, adolescent substance abuse, and competency to stand trial. She has provided expert testimony in several jurisdictions in these areas.

Dr. Shelton has expertise in the clinical evaluation of the following areas: learning disabilities, giftedness, developmental disorders (mental retardation, autism, Asperger's, PDD), and the broad spectrum of emotional and behavioral disorders (e.g., ADHD, depression, anxiety, etc.) She has extensive experience in the evaluation and treatment of sexual abuse.
